There is still talk about the truck driver shortage in our country. The shortage of over the road truck drivers have been an on-going topic for years and we still do not have an end in site. Should we be concerned about the shortage of truck drivers? That depends on who you talk to, the United States Department of Labor and other analysts. The discussion about the shortage of drivers is more a priority for the states and the trucking companies than the federal government.
There is a growing concern among truck drivers that the industry is not growing in a Big way enough to meet the demand for truck drivers. The trucking companies point out that they are constantly hiring more drivers to come in and fill those openings. Now then, let’s talk about why the trucking industry continues to grow.
First, we have the growth of the economy. As the economy grows, more companies will want to get into the marketplaces. As more and more companies grow, so does the need for more transportation. This is primary reason for the need for more truck drivers. Secondly, there is the ” Baby Boomers” generation starting to retire. The government has had a falling-back on creating more transportation qualifications (such as air brakes) because of cost. However, they did increase regulations on freight xruck headriers to help deal with fuel costs and the fall-back on using more energy efficient vehicles. That has helped raise the price of freight transportation, which in turn has had a positive effect on the trucking industry.
Thirdly, and most significantly, there is a growing weariness among truck drivers. This is noted by many demographic indicators as people become more mobile and their need for personal transportation increase. What is interesting is that the networks that truck drivers have to deal with are getting smaller. For instance, in a smaller urban area with a population of 20,000 or less there are hundreds of trucking companies. You could be talking to one of those companies in the next five years before you even have your job for yourself. What is interesting is that in most of these cases, these companies are growing and they are utilizing more drivers. What does this mean for the trucking industry? This means that the smaller the urban area with a population of 10,000 or less is becoming more rural and therefore, the towns and the small towns are becoming the destinations for all types of trucking and hauling companies. What this means is that in five years when these small towns are fully staffed they could be served not only from a regional market but also international.
Fourthly, with a smaller community and trucking concentration you will have a lower service fee or income. This is going to be great for the trucking company as more and more truckers move their freight through the community and lower their laundry fees. This in effect is creating a greater service level for the trucking companies and they lower prices as they increase their client base.
Lastly, you will need to make sure that you are getting quality driving and possess the right attributes and skills. This is going to be key for a lot of small trucking communities. If you are a driver with the proper driving and manners and also have the ability to communicate, you will be comfortable in small trucking communities. If you are a small trucker, moving into a small trucking community could be the beginning of a longer career as you will discover what you are capable of and what you truly wanted. It is a great next step for the average worker that is searching for the right job. These factors and others are what make a career in small trucking work for the average worker.
